Willingness to Enter a Flooded Road - Seeking to confirm values presented in the LifeSim Technical Reference Manual #6

@Starphire1

Description

@Starphire1

This is related to vehicles crossing flooded roads.

Scenario

The depth driven willingness to enter flooded road default values in the LifeSim model appear to be inconsistent with Appendix F of the LifeSim Technical Reference Manual. For example, the maximum value of 3 m suggested in Table 6-7 (USACE, 2021) appears to vary from the literature summary in Appendix F on pages F-7 and F-8 of the same document.

Could the developers please advise if the proposed workaround, below, is appropriate and if an update of the LifeSim Technical Reference Manual is planned?

Workaround

To model willingness to enter a flooded road, the values in our LifeSim models were modified to align with Appendix F of the LifeSim Technical Reference Manual (USACE, 2021) and a maximum depth willingness to enter flooded road of approximately 1 m was adopted instead of the 3 m recommended in the Technical Reference Manual. Please find further details below.

In summary

  • LifeSim default standard deviation of 0.6096m (2ft) was changed to 0.2 m to align with the value recommended in Table F-1 (USACE, 2021)
  • Maximum value was reduced from 3 m to approximately 1 m based on the in-text maximum depth description on page F-7 for low clearance vehicles and page F-8 for high clearance vehicles (USACE, 2021)

Table 1 LifeSim adopted ‘Depth Driven Willingness to Enter Flooded Road’ values
Low Clearance High Clearance Vehicle
Mean (m) 0.35 0.52
Standard deviation (m) 0.2 0.2
Puddle depth (m) 0.06 0.1
Maximum (m) 0.91 1.07
